The Newcastle Collection is a two year project created to conserve and promote the unique collections of material which have been acquired over the years since the beginnings of the public library service in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1880.
The project has been made possible by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund www.hlf.org.uk
It is broadly divided into three strands:
- improved access
- outreach work with local schools and communities
The opening of a new City Library in June 2009 provided the opportunity to display these collections to the public for the first time. They will be displayed in environmentally controlled conditions in a special area within the Local Studies Department on the 6th floor of the new library.
